Experience

I have been teaching various linguistics subjects, particularly language documentation, language description and linguistic fieldwork methodology at Leiden University (The Netherlands), University of Naples "l'Orientale" (Italy) and Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia). I want to be a tutor because I have the great experience, expertise and communication skills to effectively teach the in and outs of the methodology, the technique and the theory to document and describe languages starting from the recording of speech from mother tongue speakers. My expertise is not only the result of study and teaching, it goes along an intense activity of research on oral, poorly described, minority and endangered languages spoken in remote areas in Ethiopia. I am the author of grammars, descriptive articles and speech corpora of various languages, for the vast majority based on raw fieldwork material collected by myself. I am presently a postdoc researcher working on Nara, a language spoken in Eritrea. I definitely aim to develop my career in the great discipline of fieldwork-based language documentation and description.

Hobbies

In general, I love whatever is simple, beautiful and culturally rich and interesting. My interests include music (listening and playing percussions and piano), dancing, reading, movies, theatre, opera, documentary making, cooking, wines as well as more physical activities, such as gardening, do-it-yourself and, of course, sport (mainly biking, swimming and football). But my main, real, passion is my family (I have three children). I can surely state that my life goes on thanks to them and for them. To summarise, besides being a good teacher and researcher, I am a quite, wholehearted and hard-working 44-year guy with great social skills. These characteristics result from my Sicilian origins (my house by the sea in Siracusa is where I give my on-line classes) and my great international experience that put me in contact with a number of different social environments, cultures and languages (besides Italian I speak English, French some Dutch and Spanish and Amharic, the main language in Ethiopia). I make use of these human qualities to make my classes pleasant, friendly and in some moments also funny. The result is that the filter that naturally exists between two initial strangers, such as teacher and student , is reduced drastically. In such a context information and concepts flow easily and smoothly between the two, with great advantages for the learning process.
